President Stig Enemark visits India at the Map World Forum

President Stig Enemark visited Hyderabad, India, 10-12 February
2009, during the Map World Forum Conference, being the key biannual regional
event on Geo Spatial Information, organized by GIS Development, India.
The conference was headed by the President of GIS Development Dr.
M.
P. Narayanan and the inaugural address was given by the Hon´ble Vice
President of India Mr. Shri M Hamid Ansari followed by a guest
address by Hon´ble Minister for Science & Technology and Earth Science Mr.
Kapil Sibal. Other Guest Addresses were given by Dr. Jane Goodall
and Prof. C. K. Prahaled. Key note addresses in a total of four
plenary sessions were given by high profile people from the government of
India and a range of prominent people from the profession and businesses. A
total of 3 Symposia, 6 Seminars, 4 Forums, and 8 Technical sessions
concluded a very comprehensive program with about 250 presentations. The
conference was attended by more than 1,000 participants.
The overall conference theme was entitled “Geospatial Technology for
Sustainable Planet Earth”. The plenary sessions were focused on
Geospatial Technologies and Development; Geospatial Technology – Development
and Trends; Geospatial for the Public Sector; and Geospatial for Sustainable
Infrastructure Development. The total program is available at

President Stig Enemark was invited as keynote speaker for the seminar on
Land Administration. The session was chaired by Mr. Vinod Agrawal,
Commissioner Survey and Settlements, Andrhra Pradesh, India. Other
presentations at the seminar included Prof. Gottfried Konecny
(Germany), Maj Gen M. V. Bhat, Additional Director General Military
Survey of India; and Maj Gen R. S. Tanwar, Additional Surveyor
General, Survey of India. The seminar concluded by a panel discussion
focusing on the Need for LIS for Indian Citizens. The seminar clearly proved
how important this issue is to India.
During the conference President Enemark had the opportunity to discuss
with key players in the surveying field in India, in order to invite the
Institution of Surveyors, India to become a member of FIG and thereby join
the international surveying community. The response to this was very
positive and promising.
President Enemark also visited in Delhi to discuss with Mr.
Sanjiv
Nair, Joint Secretary at the Ministry of the Ministry of Science and
Technology, about the Survey of India becoming an affiliate member of FIG.
