End to end BIM from design to Facility Management is
implemented to the World’s Largest Airport by IGA. Istanbul 3rd airport
Project is the world’s largest airport project, the project scope
encompasses 4 phases. The first phase includes the construction of 3
runways, the Terminal Building including 5 Piers (1.3 million m2) , a
carpark ( 700,000 m2) , TC Tower (5000 m2) and other site support
facilities with THY Buildings.
At the end of the completion of all phases, a visionary project will
come to life providing 76 million m2 of airport with 6 runways,
supporting 3,500 take-offs and landings per day, 200 million passengers
a year, and access to 350 worldwide destinations.
BIM at IGA has been the integrative platform between all the related
parties in case of design and coordination. The resulting clash-free
–ready to manufacture- BIM Model with necessary engineering decisions
considering all disciplines is being shared to the site directly by
mobile applications. This leads to a more faster and correct application
of the coordinated design without any delay and with minimum problems on
site. BIM is being used in many other perspectives such as QA-QC,
Quantity Surveying, Planning and Project Control, Energy Analysis, Test
& Commissioning and Facility Management.
Another breakthrough in IGA is utilizing Site Teams in order to
supervise site installations in accordance to the BIM Model, with the
help of iPads and BIM360 applications. BIM site team have been working
closely with other discipline site responsible and even subcontractors
leading them to the correct application. BIM360 layout and compatible
robotic total stations are also utilized in the project by BIM
Management Team in order to close track the BIM conformity of the site
installations.
Since the airport will be operated for 25 years after its completion,
not only through the design and construction stages but also during the
operation stage, usage of BIM plays a crucial role. Efficiently reaching
all the necessary information and resolving of future operational
problems related to airport systems during pre-commissioning,
commissioning and maintenance stages will be possible with the usage of
BIM.
